Bill O'Brien announced that Ryan Fitzpatrick will start at the QB position for the Texans. But is this a good or bad thing for fantasy owners?

The Good:

He has started 77 games in his career. More than Case Keenum and TJ Yates, the other two Qb's on the roster.

He finally has some great offensive weapons around him and a pretty good offensive line to protect him in Texas.

The Bad:

He is a very inconsistent QB. Will toss an occasional great game then kill the team with interceptions and mental errors. He has sufficient short passing and intermediate arm strength, but can't complete the deep post or any other deep passing routes with accuracy.

Since he has played on bad teams his entire career, this is his big chance to prove himself as a starting NFL QB.

Just what kind of fantasy impact will he have on the tight end and receiver positions? WR Andre Johnson is a deep ball threat so coach Bill O'Brien will have to change the passing offense to accommodate the weak arm of Fitzpatrick.

A.Johnson fans should not be worried. He had some huge games with Keenum tossing him short passes last year. The running backs and tight ends might benefit the most by having Fitzpatrick start.

This is a situation to watch in camp and during pre-season. If he performs well this summer, he might be a steal in the draft or late desperation pick if you want to wait. But, regardless, he is only a Qb # 2, so don't get your hopes up too high on draft day!

Agreed James. He is a serviceable QB, but a backup. Think he would be a nice pickup in a 2 QB league though. I wouldn't really look at his Tenn stint. Look to his Buffalo years as what to expect. And Buffalo didn't nearly have the talent the Texans do.

Nic,

I think he knows this might be his last shot on a decent team. So I think he will be playing his guts out.

Who knows, he might be effective. He is one of the guys I will be watching this summer. But lets face it. If he comes out throwing interceptions, he will get yanked quickly and Keenum will most likely be starting.

He has a gunslinger mentality without a gunslinger arm.

I would only take him in a 2 QB league or in a league where I was drafting in 20 rounds or more and could grab three QB's.

He is a high risk pick.

Savage will be the first rookie QB to start in the NFL season. These are just words from a coach to set up friendly competition. Highly doubt Fitz can keep his job As starter.
