I already posted annual my 2012 NFL Season Predictions, complete with records, playoff teams, and eventual Super Bowl matchup and champion. Those who click thru the link will see that I have Baltimore vs. Green Bay for my "official" Super Bowl prediction.

But I wanted to give a "dark horse" prediction as well since there are many possible outcomes for the 2012 NFL season.

My dark horse candidates for Super Bowl 47 are the Houston Texans in the AFC and the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC.

Houston has the complete package. A very good QB in Matt Schaub. The best RB in the league in Arian Foster. A great backup RB in Ben Tate. An elite NFL WR in Andre Johnson. A good TE in Owen Daniels. A very good offensive line. A great defense even though they lost Mario Williams. What they lack is a solid complimentary WR opposite Johnson, and more playoff experience. But the Texans are a team with a lot to like for making it all the way.

Atlanta is a bit more of a stretch because of their defense. I expect the defense will be improved enough though so they can seriously challenge. It will help the defense tremendously that the offense is primed for an explosion of points. Matt Ryan, despite not ever having won a playoff game, is entering the early stages of the prime of his career. While Michael Turner may be aging, he's still a good power RB who should be able to get tough yards and find the end zone. Backup Jacquizz Rodgers is slated for an increased offensive role as the 3rd down RB and change of pace to Turner and he provides an element of speed and breakaway capability to make big plays. Roddy White is one of the best possession style WR's in the NFL who also possesses some big play talent. Julio Jones is an emerging stud WR with nigh unlimited potential. Tony Gonzalez is old, but had his best season in 2011 since coming to Atlanta and is still a solid receiving target for moving the chains. The OL is good enough to get the job done and could show real improvement if Ryan and this new offense clicks.

It's not too farfetched to see a Houston vs. Atlanta Super Bowl.

And if we did see it, I would take the Texans to be the winners: 31-27.

I wonder how far Houston would have gone last year if Schaub didnt get injured.

And they will not make it past the Steelers, but they will make it further than SF 49'ers

“I am hosting one league on NFL.com as well. Personally I thing there projections are way out of sync and have been less than reliable. I completely ignored them all year and instead took input from the LA at FFS which has proven to be much more accurate”. (Hooked 5 year Member)
