Can anyone in their right mind explain to me why the owners and players met for two days of court ordered mediation, and now won't meet again until June 7th? It leads one to think that neither side is really all that serious about getting something done in an expedited manner.

Why break off talks after only two days? What other pressing business do both sides have to go back to?

Is there an owners checkers tournament going on? Does DeMaurice Smith have a vacation to take? Why are they going to wait 3 weeks before getting together again? Why not spend 3 weeks actually sitting at a table and trying to get this thing done before the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals hears arguments on June 3rd about whether to continue to enforce the lockout or lift it?

Perhaps there's a hot dog eating contest going on somewhere that dwarfs the importance of getting a deal done?

I think I've used more question marks in the first 3 paragraphs here than I have in the last 30 blog entries combined. I'm just flabbergasted that both sides are going to take a 3 week sabbatical to mull over where they stand legally instead of sitting down and trying to work on a resolution of how to split up 9 billion dollars!

Like so many NFL fans, I'm frustrated with how this whole situation has played out. It never should have gotten this far. It wouldn't have gotten this far if both sides would have actually put the effort in before the original March 4th deadline. But no. Instead we got rhetoric, posturing, and finger pointing.

I really want to vomit. This whole thing has gotten ridiculous.

For those who want to know where this fiasco goes from here:

Now that the whopping 2 days of court ordered mediation has concluded, the owners and players legal teams won't meet again until June 7th. At that time, they will begin a new round of court ordered mediation. Apparently in this latest round of talks, the owners offered a new proposal to the players. While that's a good sign, it isn't expected to be accepted by the players. But it does give a new starting point for the next round.

On June 3rd, the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in St. Louis will begin hearing arguments from both sides of whether the case should be heard in the court system, or should go before the National Labor Relations Board. The owners contend the players' dissolution of the NFLPA as a union was an unfair labor negotiation tactic and that the new Trade Association is just the union in disguise. If the appeals court rules in favor of the owners, the case will then go to NLRB. If the appeals court rules in favor of the players, then the case stays in the courts. It's believed that the owners have the edge here.

Meanwhile, there is a separate case in front of Judge David Doty in Minneapolis regarding 4 billion dollars in television revenue. Doty has previously ruled that the NFL unfairly had procured this money as insurance against a lockout, and since the Minneapolis court has been much more favorable to the players in prior rulings, it's thought he will likely put the money in escrow until both sides come to an agreement and that he'll award some damages to the players as the owners had hoped to keep this money away from the players. The players have reportedly asked for about 700 million dollars in damages be awarded. How long it takes for this case to be rendered a verdict is unknown.

And that's where we stand right now, kids. And instead of both sides working hard to get a deal done, they are taking the next 3 weeks off after only 2 days of face to face negotiations. Both sides apparently have a wine tasting, or rodeo, or movie festival, or tiddlywinks tournament that is much more important than working out a deal.

I guess this is a "cool off" period. I agree Russ, this is down right crazy! Unfortunately both sides seem to believe they are right and irregardless of their "starting point" don't seem they want to budge on what they feel they need or are do.

Have we thought about a fantasy NFL season to support our fantasy leagues? Hmmm....

I don't think anyone will argue with you on that Russ.  I feel like we need to sit them in a room and yell at them like little children.  Maybe have them right on the chalk board a thousand times... "We will not disappoint fans. We will not disappoint fans..."

No matter what happens now this season is going to be damaged in one way or another.  Even if they get it sorted out next month, teams are normally training and getting ready by now.  Makes me wonder what players will be in shape for the season and which ones have been eating chicken wings.   It's going to have some intriguing effects on the fantasy season (if there is one).

Nic, it means that it will take another 4-6 games for the players to get into to their "game shape" and get timing, communication down. Guess it will be one of those "down" years in fantasy football. Anyone for Madden 11?

Good points and they are not going  to do anything until every legal avenue is explored. Both sides are posturing and June will cause something, either more digging in by one side or another, or some movement.
Trust me - we are watching this closely and hoping good news sooner rather than later. Stay tuned.
