Fantasy Football Player Injury News and Notes 11-13-12

Bye weeks: Minnesota, NY Giants, Seattle, Tennessee

Quarterbacks

*-Michael Vick is not expected to play week 11 because of the concussion he suffered this past weekend. The Eagles are likely going to be in no hurry to bring back Vick, so expect this to be a multiple week concussion as they want to see what they potentially have in Nick Foles. If Foles does well, it won't be a surprise if you don't see Vick start another game this season for the Eagles. For now though hold onto Vick in case I'm reading this situation wrong, and if you have Vick and need a QB acquire Foles.

*-Pittsburgh is likely to be without Ben Roethlisberger in week 11 after he suffered a sprained throwing shoulder last night. You know Roethlisberger usually plays thru injuries, but this is to his throwing arm and it sounds like it could be a multiple week injury at this point. Tentatively expect Byron Leftwich to start for Pittsburgh week 11 and possibly longer. We should get a better idea on how much time Roethlisberger will miss later in the week. If forced to start, Leftwich has proven in the past to be a serviceable fantasy QB, but he does lack upside to be more than that. Not a bad insurance acquisition for Big Ben owners though.

*-Jay Cutler is deemed doubtful for Monday night's matchup against San Francisco because of a concussion suffered this weekend. The extra day could mean Cutler makes it back and gains clearance in time, but for now, consider it likely that Jason Campbell will start for the Bears. Campbell is an inconsistent QB and with a poor matchup against a strong 49ers pass defense, I'd leave him on the waiver wire unless you are really QB desperate. The Bears must not think Cutler will be able to play as they signed Josh McCown earlier today.

*-Alex Smith is also uncertain for Monday night as he suffered a concussion this past weekend. However, Smith doesn't have a lengthy concussion history according to reports and he stands a 50/50 chance of gaining medical clearance by Monday. We should know for sure later in the week. If Smith can't play, Colin Kaepernick would start for the 49ers and despite a poor matchup against the Bears, could be a decent fantasy desperation play due to his running abilities.

*-Brady Quinn claims to have received medical clearance to return from his concussion and play in week 11. It will be interesting whether Romeo Crennel stays true to his word that Quinn will be the starting QB when healthy as Quinn is not a good QB and Crennel must know that. However, it's not like Matt Cassel has given much reason to keep Quinn out of the starting lineup. Cassel has been bad.

*-Rex Ryan says he's sticking with Mark Sanchez and doesn't have plans to start Tim Tebow. Credit Rex for sticking to his guns and making the call despite pressure from fans and likely also ownership.

Running Backs

*-Fred Jackson suffered a concussion this past weekend and he has already been ruled OUT for Thursday night's game vs. Miami. This means C.J. Spiller will dominate playing time and even though the matchup isn't good on paper, Spiller is way too explosive to be sat when he's expected to get a featured RB's amount of carries.

*-It's still early in the week, but it's unlikely that either Darren McFadden or Mike Goodson are going to be able to play week 11. Both are still recovering from high ankle sprains and it's very likely we see Marcel Reece handle the majority of the RB duties again for the Raiders in week 11. Reece played extensively over Taiwan Jones despite a lot of speculation that Jones would start and be the primary RB. Reece is the RB to have from the Raiders until McFadden or Goodson return.

*-It doesn't sound good for DeMarco Murray this week. Murray has been out a few weeks now because of a foot injury and it sounds like a week 12 return is more realistic. However, it is early in the week and we should know by Thursday. I expect we'll see Felix Jones start again for Dallas this week.

*-No word on Daren Sproles but with the Saints running game looking better than it ever has before, I would expect Sproles to miss week 11. The new emphasis for New Orleans has actually been on running the ball and Mark Ingram and Chris Ivory are both showing very well in that capacity. It's pushed Pierre Thomas down to being the 3rd most valuable from the trio the last 2 games.

*-Too early in the week to know if Rashard Mendenhall will be able to play week 11 or not. Mendenhall has missed the last few games with an Achilles strain and Mike Tomlin said Mendenhall is questionable for week 11. Hopefully we know more later in the week.

*-Good thing the Giants have the bye as Ahmad Bradshaw apparently suffered a neck injury this past week. We'll found out if he has any significant injury in coming days. Those with Bradshaw are strongly encouraged to acquire Andre Brown as insurance.

*-Bilal Powell suffered a concussion this past week and he is sounding unlikely to play week 11. With Joe McKnight still bothered by an ankle injury, the Jets went out and signed Kahlil Bell for depth purposes. Expect Shonn Greene to shoulder a heavy load this week against the Rams.

Wide Receivers

*-Julio Jones suffered a leg injury this past weekend and while he missed almost 2 full quarters because of it, he did return to the game and finished it out. I expect it wasn't serious, but likely he'll be sat out some in practices this week. Expect Jones to be fine for week 11.

*-Jeremy Maclin suffered a back strain injury and his status for week 11 is uncertain. I haven't heard anything that makes me believe it is serious, but we should know more later in the week. Tentatively right now, I expect Maclin to be okay. Also with the Eagles, Jason Avant suffered a hamstring injury and he likely will miss week 11. Providing Maclin plays, Riley Cooper likely would step in as the Eagles #3 WR in Avant's place.

*-Antonio Brown is considered questionable for week 11 as he recovers from an ankle injury. Brown missed last night's game and may need another week or two to get it healed up. If he can't play Emmanuel Sanders would start again in his place.

*-Robert Meachem has probably lost his starting job to Danario Alexander in San Diego. Alexander was again explosive for the Chargers and as long as his surgically repaired knees hold up, he'll continue to get more work as a starter opposite Malcom Floyd. Meachem can safely be dropped as he's been a flop even when he was starting.

*-Too early in the week to know if the Packers will have Jordy Nelson back this week or not. Nelson is nursing both an ankle and hamstring injuries. Hopefully we know more by Thursday.

*-No word yet on Pierre Garcon and whether he'll be returning this week or not. Reportedly, Garcon is still having pain issues in his foot and rumors are the Redskins may decide to shut him down for the season if he doesn't get back onto the practice in the next two weeks.

*-Danny Amendola reportedly made it thru week 10 without issue and he appears to be good to go week 11. He's emerging as a legitimate fantasy starter after a solid game against a strong 49ers pass defense this past week.

*-Steve Breaston was a healthy inactive last night. Those holding onto Breaston can safely drop him as he has practically no fantasy value.

Tight Ends

*-Brandon Myers suffered a concussion and his status for week 11 is very questionable as this is not his first concussion. There's a chance he may gain medical clearance to play in week 11, but those counting on it would be wise to have a backup plan ready. David Ausberry would likely get a few more looks in the Raiders offense if Myers were to miss the game.

*-After missing last week with a hip injury, it's not certain if Owen Daniels will be able to play week 11 or not. Another case of check back later in the week. While there was a lot of speculation that James Casey would have an increased role with Daniels out week 10, it was Garrett Graham who stepped in and got the most playing time.

*-No word yet on whether Coby Fleener will be able to play this week or not. Fleener has missed the last couple of games with a shoulder injury and right now he'd have to be considered questionable for week 11.
