2012 Training Camp Injuries: Tight Ends

by Kelly Grogan (8/1/12)
Updated 8/31/12. All Updates are in BOLD type

TIGHT ENDS

Jake Ballard/TE/NE (Knee) - He tore his ACL in the Super Bowl and is unlikely to play this season.  He is currently on the pre-season PUP list with New England and not worth drafting at this time.

Brent Celek/TE/PHL (Knee) - He suffered an MCL sprain on the first day of training camp.  He is expected to be fine for the season opener and should be considered a lower end TE1 in most leagues.
*** UPDATE***
He did playing the third preseason game and appears healthy enough to start the season.

Chris Cooley/TE/WSH (Knee, Fingers) - He is practicing and the injuries don't seem to be a concern at this point.  He is expected to share time with Fred Davis, which limits his fantasy value.  He is a back-up TE at this point.
*** UPDATE***
Cooley was released by the Redskins and has no fantasy value at this point.

Antonio Gates/TE/SD (Plantar Fascia) - His injury plagued him for most of the 2011 season.  He appears to be healthy again.  With the departure of WR Vincent Jackson, we expect the Chargers to be counting on Gates a lot this season.  If he can stay healthy, he will be one of the top TE's.  He is worthy of a TE1 selection.  He has looked great in training camp.  With Vincent Jackson in Tampa Bay, the Chargers will be counting on him a lot this season.  Now with the injury to WR Vincent Brown, Gates will be singled out even more by QB Philip Rivers.

Dennis Pitta/TE/BAL (Broken Hand) - He had surgery to repair his hand and is expected to miss the remainder of training camp.  He has some fantasy value, when healthy, but should be considered a free agent pick-up after the season begins.

Zach Miller/TE/JAX (Shoulder) - He was limited to only four games last season due to the shoulder injury.  He has been cleared to practice.  With reports that TE Marcedes Lewis was not in the best shape when he reported to camp, there may be an opportunity for Miller.  But, even with that said, he would not be more that a fantasy back-up at this point.  He suffered a slight tear in his pectoral muscle and will be limited in training camp.  The Jaguars are hoping he will be ready for week 1, but no guarantees.  He's looking like a fantasy free agent pick-up after the season starts, if he is producing.
*** UPDATE***
He was taken off the field in the third preseason game with a lower leg injury.  He was expected to be the back-up TE but has very little fantasy value now with his injuries.

Zach Miller/TE/SEA (Concussion) - He suffered a concussion in the Seahawks first preseason game.  He will be evaluated over the next week.  He is a free agent option after the season starts.
*** UPDATE***
He has returned to practice and did play in the third preseason game.  He is still considered a free agent pick-up, if he is playing well during the season.

Tony Moeaki/TE/KC (Knee) - Moeaki suffered a torn ACL last season, but is expected to be ready for the start of the 2012 campaign.  With the signing of free agent Kevin Boss (OAK) we expect Moeaki will be splitting time with him.  His fantasy value has taken a hit with the injury and Boss signing with the Chiefs.  He is practicing, but has limited fantasy value with Boss in the picture.
*** UPDATE***
He has played in the team's first two preseason games, but Kevin Boss is here and will play a key role.  Neither TE is worthy of drafting on your fantasy team.

Ben Watson/TE/CLV (Concussions) - His concussions limited his playing time to 13 games.  He appears to be healthy and ready to go this training camp.  He is expected to lose opportunities to TE Evan Moore which hurts his fantasy value.  He is a TE option only in larger leagues.  He is practicing, but most likely should be considered a fantasy free agent pick-up after the season starts, if he is doing well.

Jason Witten/TE/DAL (Spleen) - He will have to take it easy for the next five days after that a decision will be made if he would need surgery or not.  He said he is hoping to be ready for Week 1 but there is no time table for his return. If healthy he is a sure TE1.
*** UPDATE***
He had his spleen scanned and does not need surgery.  His status for Week 1 is still in question.
