Aside from kickers, the backup tight end position is probably the least sexiest fantasy position on draft day. Admittedly, if you take Gronkowski, Graham or any of the top five or six TE starters, you don’t have to worry much about this pick. However, let’s say you draft one of the guys in the latter half of the tight end rankings like Brandon Pettigrew, Fred Davis or Jacob Tamme. Comfortable? That’s why I think it’s prudent to have a good understanding of who you might take as your reserve. Investigate guys like Jermaine Gresham, Dustin Keller, Jared Cook and Greg Olsen and have an idea of where you intend to grab him in the draft. You might be looking at using him a lot more than just on your starter’s bye week.

You know this is one of those years where I didn't draft a back up TE. I am always going on about drafting back ups for all positions. This year I went against my better judgment and didn't draft one. There are still quite a few worthwhile TEs on the wire, chances are I will own one of them sooner than later. Kyle Rudolph and Ben Watson are high on my 'want list' at this time.

Just had our draft Sunday, got Vernon Davis (who I have ranked as the 3rd best TE on my draft board) and got Keller late. (We have a 30 round IDP draft so it really wouldn't help most people to know where I drafted them).
----
Draft: 3QB's 4RB's 5WR's 3TE's 2K 4DL 5LB 4DB.

Start: 1QB 2RB's 2WR's 1TE 1K 2DL 2LB 2DB.

PPR League: 1PPR, 1 pt 10 yds rush/receive, 1pt 10yds pass, 6 pts TD

Ok, so in this picture with a 15 round draft. Yea, I said a 15 round draft. Would you still take a backup TE even if you took Pettigrew?

I don't think I would take one. We get .5 PPR with 6 BN players. Think I am staying with one TE and focus on WR and RB. Will draft a backup QB to fill in the bye week.

So I should give you the whole picture. QB, 3WR, 2RB, 1 TE-K-D.

I think you have a great point, but this should applied to some leagues, but not most. Yes? No?

I think it gets difficult with only 15 rounds. Unless you are willing to sacrifice a RB or WR spot to take aback up TE I would probably pass and see how players are performing as the season rolls on. Make the determination the week your TE is on a bye if you can add/drop from waivers to fill the open position.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing. Waitin' to hear back fm the Commish. He made some changes that I don't think will fly with others. We can figure it out at the draft. We have always done 16 rounds before w/ a Flex.

In this case I would take a backup TE, cause I would have an extra spot.

Later - Thanks Dan for posting this topic! Hope to read you input before Saturday....

LOL...yeah I believe you are correct. Not sure the DM (or is that GM) was consulted before I made the decision not to back up my TE. The more I look at it, the more I am realizing I am okay with this move.

I never take a backup TE. I'd rather go deep at RB counting on at least one season ending injury. Happens to me every year at that position.
