It happens.

I just knew that I was overlooking somebody when I recently posted my early 2011 fantasy football sleeper WR article (which I encourage you to check out and post comments about here). I racked my brain trying to think of who it was, and thankfully, one of our frequent forums posters (Nic) brought it back to me in the 2011 fantasy sleeper thread in our lineup help forum.

Jerome Simpson of Cincinnati.

In the last 3 games of the 2010 season, Simpson was finally let onto the playing field in games (something Marvin Lewis had always stated he wasn't ready for previously) and responded in a big way catching 20 passes for 277 yards and 3 TD's. In the last 2 weeks of the season, when both Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco were out with injuries, Simpson produced 18 of those 20 catches, for 247 of those 277 yards, and all 3 of those TD's. He went over 100 receiving yards in both of those games. Simpson's exclusion from my list was an oversight on my part.

It's so easy at this time of year to forget about certain things that happened during the regular season. We have all the Super Bowl hype in full swing, awards are being announced every day, and the CBA is starting to become more and more prominent as we approach the March 4th deadline. But Simpson deserves early fantasy football sleeper status for those in dynasty leagues and have open free agent transactions going on right now.

Terrell Owens is a free agent and is almost certainly not going to be back. Chad Ochocinco probably will be back but is in the final year of his deal. Simpson is in the final year of his rookie deal. There are some other good, young WR's in Cincinnati like Andre Caldwell and Jordan Shipley (who had a nice rookie season with 52 catches for 600 yards, and 3 TD's), but they aren't the potential playmaker type Simpson can be.

It adds up to exactly what I look for in potential fantasy sleepers: contract year; likely starter on day one; has flashed big time skills in a couple of games.

Jerome Simpson should have been on that list. Thankfully, I have this nifty blog to make corrections and/or additions like that though.

He is on my radar to. I won't call him a sleeper just yet until I see what the Bengals do this summer. I think there will be  a lot more changes in Cincy.

Thanks for the shout out Russ. What makes the situation more interesting, is who will the Bengals take in the draft come April.  I am seeing quite a few mock drafts with the Bengals taking AJ Green from Georgia.

I still like Simpson but that could complicate things for him if Ocho comes back, because I could definitely see them pushing for AJ to get right in there.  Still a little speculative, but something to keep an eye on.

Nice to see that you also think Jordy Nelson is a potential sleeper at WR based on one of my earlier postings thinking he was someone to watch as well.

Nelson and Jones will have great careers only problem will be the packers keeping these guys. Especially if they win the supe bowl.
